We all know that monopolies are bad for consumers. If the phone company was still a monopoly, we'd all be waiting weeks to have a Princess Phone installed. Cell phones would still be science fiction. Although some people think that Microsoft is a monopoly in the computer industry, if it really were a monopoly, we wouldn't have Apple laptops, iPods, and browsers from Mozilla, Google, and others. The Internet has been a boon to consumers because so small companies can easily compete to produce products to make our lives easier or more enjoyable, such as MySpace, Facebook, Amazon, eBay, etc.
Nuance Communications makes software for speech recognition, so that callers can speak to telephone systems ("Customer service please"). They also make software that allows the telephone system to speak to callers ("Your checking account balance is forty-seven dollars"). Most people hate these systems. But if done well, many people like these systems and prefer them to pressing 1 for this, 2 for that, etc. In a world of competition, lots of companies would develop these systems, and the companies that design systems that work well would succeed, and companies that produce the terrible systems that we have to deal with today would quickly go out of business.
But Nuance doesn't want competition. They've gone out and bought up most of the companies that used to compete with them. When new companies come along to compete with them, they threaten expensive lawsuits that allege infringement of their patent portfolio. Nuance isn't interested in making life easier for consumers, they just want to sell their consumer un-friendly systems. They don't invest in R&D to create better systems for consumers, they just invest in buying their competitors so they don't have to compete. This strategy is anti-consumer, anti-capitalist, and even anti-American. The result is frustrating phone systems that keep consumers from getting good customer service. A perfect example for this is exactly their flagship product, Dragon NaturallySpeaking which STILL cannot be installed on a 64-bit OS. AND, they don't even bother to do anything about it. Their best response to all the blogs, articles, online petitions etc. is something like "we may be offering a 64 bit version at a future date..."

There is/was a number combination to get transferred to the "priority queue" to speak with a representative. I can't remember what it is, though - my son had figured it out. The representatives have always been extremely helpful (and California based for what that's worth) when we talked to them.

Went through Amazon and they said the toy was purchased through their 2nd party vendor Outside the Toy Box. I ordered my nephew's present in November for Christmas and he NEVER got it and I never got notice that it would not be sent nor did I get a refund. You should consider adding JC Penney stores to your list. I have received horrible service from them, even after going through their managers. I have spent months on the telephone trying to get a problem solved with their custom decorating department, which is a leased service that Pennys provides to customers in their stores. I would not recommend that anyone use their custom decorating department.

This wedding site is a scam. Anyone happen to know a cheat code to get past all the prompts to speak directly to a human at Care Credit? 5 courses of prompts requesting about 2 dozen input numbers each in my book is ridiculous. When I call any company, and I don't know how to get around the messaging system, if it's a system that you absolutely can't get around I always respond as a new customer with no account information. That often gets me where I want to go.

I called 800-GOOG-411, told them the city was Des Moines and that I was looking for MediaCom. The 1st listing was for MediaCom on 2205 Ingersal Ave. and the number was 515-246-1555. They then connected me at no cost.

has amazon gotten so smug and complacent that they no longer feel the need to provide callers to customer service with domestic(=USA)call-center operators?I've had occasions when I called thinking my question could only be best answered by a stateside USA operator---only to be connected to somebody in India or the Phillipines.On each of those occasions, I ask to be transferred to a USA call center(or given the "secret" direct telephone no.)only to be given the NO CAN DO response.Their standard response has been that Amazon customer response calls are randomly routed, and there is no assured, guaranteed way of connecting with a USA call center short of dumb luck.This has been especially infuriating to me whenever I've posted feedback responses to them and never got an email reply--AND THEN COULDN'T REACH THEM WHEN TRYYYING TO CALL!!!

When I call these numbers from Massachusetts I get routed directly to Verizon customer service. I'd suspect that they will only connect to Fairpoint in Northern NE where they have acquired the customers from Verizon. In order for me to add these, you will have to provide me with the instructions re how to get to a human. If you do that, I'd be glad to add Fairpoint Comms to the gh database.

I cannot get a hold of a person at chex systems. The number on their site is to request a report of why they reported you. When you get the report, the number they give you gives you an option of speaking to a person, you wait on hold and then after 30 minutes or so it rings like you're being connected and it hangs up.

Can you find & add a shortcut for getting to a human at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (800-321-3497)? They have at least 5 minutes worth of required prompts and recorded messages/options that are totally irrelevant to someone just looking to find out what happened to their claim before they even put you in a queue for a human (at which point you may spend another 5-10 minutes waiting). Pressing 0 at any of these steps doesn't work. Thanks.

Zappos shoes is pretty easy, but should be on the list. Press 1 at the first prompt, and you get someone. That's for sales, not sure about the other prompts, but knowing their service, they also probably get you humans.

What's wrong with 800--474-6836 for HP? It will get you to an agent in India? Ask to be transferred to a US call center. Did you rate HP? Just click on their name.

You've probably already solved this but when I had a problem with my HP all in one I went online to correspond with their technicians. The language problem doesn't occur much there and I had very good luck in getting a replacement printer.

Public Storage: 1. Calling a local 'store' gives a series of voicemail menus, eventually ending at the national office. I would like to know how to get through directly to the local place. (examples in Maryland: 301-670-1893 in Gaithersburg, 301-972-1163 in Germantown, 301-948-3350 in Rockville, 301-424-2640 at another location in Rockville, etc.)
2. The national customer service person says that all questions and complaints are directed to local district managers, even if they are the problem. Is there a corporate number (Corporate Relations or something) that will reach a person who will listen like a human and use his brain, and who can overrule the district manager?

What about OCWEN mortgage co? They're terrible! Not only does it take days to get in touch w/ a human, but when you do, they speak Indian! Indian! The csr reps know nothing, they don't even bother transferring you to anyone, because no one has any answers. Their headquartered in West Palm Beach though, so we can "visit" them in person if needed. They love that!

On your UK listing for Abbey ( Abbey National) you have 08459 724 724. That is their main number and gets you a human being as you say usually in India. 08459 numbers are national rate charged calls
If you dial 0800 731 7774 or 0800 587 2758 it takes you to the same place and a human being more often in the UK rather than India, (which most in the UK prefer) but is free call 0800 number so costs nothing. I haven't paid for a phone call to Abbey in years!

I came across this entry and had to respond. My room mate has had some terrible credit problems after a long illness and hospital stay. Need I say that numerous collection agencies have been harassing her day and night! But there was one Shining Light! The Economic Recovery Systems company. Although this company had a collection account to collect, they really went out of their way to help my room mate with her debt problems. No harassment or belittlement; they were Professional and affective! The worked with my room mate and gave her the data she needed in which to find help. I'm pleased to say that my room mate is just about debt free thanks to Economic Recovery Systems which asked for No Payment for their help! I suspect their way of doing business get results that gets their clients debts paid first. We very much thank the folks at Economic Recovery Systems. Glad to have run across this blog entry.

NFCU is great. The number is 1-888-842-NFCU (6328) and to reach a human being, all you need to do is press zero at the first prompt. If I recall correctly, the delay is estimated, and usually not very long. Hope this is up-to-date and helps!

I have had some major problems with Westinghouse LCD HDTV Model SK-26H520S. I bought a refurbished unit from Buy.com Oct 30, 2007, it died January 6, 2008, I returned it at my expense to Westinghouse January 8 and it took almost two months for them to send a replacement, also refurbished. It died on April 1, 2008 (is this significant? April Fools Day?). They got it about a week later and this company just cannot achieve greatness in customer satisfaction. Two DUDs is too much! Customer service is not their high point anymore than their ability to 'refurbish' their own electronics properly. I bought this through Buy.Com but Westinghouse really dropped the ball. I've written the Los Angeles BBB and they quickly disclaimed any action. The FTC doesn't want to handle it, either. Who is running this inept company that has the power to circumvent watch-dog groups?

Huge thanks to gethuman! AT & T has many different phone numbers and website addresses on their invoices and all of them suck! I was so frustrated after an hour on the phone and online that I requested a complaint form from the Bureau of Consumer Protection (a number on AT&T invoices that DOES get you a human.)I've made this story short because I have to make up for that wasted hour with AT&T. Gethuman got me to a person pretty quickly!

It is all computer voice, but all you have to say is "Talk to an associate".
The "system" will then transfer you to a human. They used to have 24 hour service, but now have limited hours, unlees you are reporting a lost or stolen card. Hope this helps.

To get a shipping label to return your modem to Qwest, call 1-888-966-4700, enter the phone number for you service, and then enter 130 when prompted for an extension. I believe this toll free number is the number dialed by Qwest customer service reps. It was given to me, I'm sure by accident, by an obviously new employee. BTW I have had T-Mo account for more than 6 yrs now and have never once felt dissatisfied with the way my issue was handled and that is for both technical and billing issues. I have a new company for you. It is GHI. You call 212-615-4444. The main automated menu will come up. DO NOT PRESS OR SAY ANYTHING. It will repeat itself 3 times (!!!). Then a SECOND AUTOMATED MENU will come up. It, too, will repeat itself 3 times. Then, finally, you will get a human representative. The key to this is NOT TO DO, OR SAY, OR PRESS ANYTHING.

can you find out the get a human code for Fairpoint Communications? They have recently taken over the Verizon telephone properties in Maine, New Hampshire & Vermont. Their main # is 1 800 688 2880, payment questions 1 800 244 3737, repair is 1 888 553 1555. Our Verizon FIOS fiber optic internet service is now serviced by them, a great service when it's working, but we've had 3 outages so far and it's just a matter of time before the next one, and when it goes, the dialtone goes too, which means I'll have to call Fairpoint from the payphone at the corner! thanks.

I'm wondering how to get and English person when calling and dealing with Sallie Mae and her like companies. Every time I have to call any company that I have an educational loan with I get an Eastern Indian. Though they may be able to speak English, they don't do it very well and normally have thick accent that is hard to understand. I feel rude asking for "an English or American person."

I just got human with Net10... Trick is to pretend to buy monthly "easy minutes." (If you instead punch in that you have previously bought minutes using credit cards, you're trapped.) I don't have the exact pattern, someone else would need to research that at this time. I may be able to get back to this later. Thanks.

I'd really love a way to get a human for National Home Protection home warranty company's Accts Payable department. If you try and go thru customer service they transfer to a line that rings forever, not even a voicemail, and going through their contractor authorization line is a pain because there is always at least 45 minutes of hold time.

Could you please add Speedway SuperAmerica to your list? We tried to get through and all we got was the runaround. You can speak to a person but if you need something specific done the person you need to speak to is unavailable. My husband spent 4 hours trying to reach someone and he was hung up on 4 times and sent to voice mail 3 times before he finally gave up.

Customer service for this company could definitely use some help. Their okay once you actually get someone on the line, but finding a phone number is nigh impossible. Even when you do call (it's not toll-free), you have to go through the automated menu like you plan to make a new reservation (anything involving a potential money transaction will usually get someone on the line. I would like Gethuman to add the company "Tom-Tom", the GPS makers from the Netherlands, to the Database. The Tech service Phone is 866-486-6866. and the Keysrokes to a live individual are then depending on weather you have a Tom-Tom GO or ONE. I believe you'll find their tech support to be 5-star quality.-something hard to find these days. they work you thru every step needed to solve your issue and don't hang-up or rush until its resolved no matter HOW long it takes. Please do not confuse this with the OUTSTANDING Medical care that GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER in Danville, PA gives. This is a fabulous hospital with many , many outstanding doctors and nurses whom generally care about their patients. We are very lucky and blessed to have such a wonderful and outstanding Hospital whom cares about its patients.
The billing department is located in NEWARK, NJ. GEISINGER HEALTH SYSTEM, P.O. Box 27727, Newark, NJ 07101-7727. Phone: Customer service - 1-800-640-4206.
We have had them make mistakes from over billing, incorrect medical codes, over payments on accounts(refunds)as well as late notices for bills never received. In addition, we have received lbills that state the bill was going to collections; on bills that we received 5 months after the service date (example - date of service March 2007 - bill received in July 2008).
We have also waited on HOLD to speak to customer service representatives for as much a 15 minutes or more.
In the past, several of the customer service reps were not knowledgeable as well as bit rude.
All these things causes undue STRESS to Customers(patients)and causes undue confusion with insurances companies. It also leaves patients managing their own health care. Keep in mind that these patients may be very old , very sick or recovering after just being discharged from the hospital.
Credit amounts are not credited automatically to the balance due and so this causes yet another phone call and more undue and unnecessary stress.
We have actually received bills for March 2007 in July 2008. The bills actually reads "passed due and delinquent."
We also received bills from this company LATE making it impossible for the payment to get back to them in time.
We wind up calling the billing department every time a bill comes in since there has been all sorts of mistakes as mentioned above.
Other mistakes have included: wrong billing codes sent to the insurance as well as double billing to the insurance company.
Is anyone else having these troubles or is just us?

eFax.com is a faxing service that works well except I don't need it after moving and faxing lease to the landlord.
There is no phone number for customer service, only live chat(!). I called tech support at 1-323-817-3205 and was not allowed to cancel. I got 2 months free service. I am going to call next week and try to cancel outright.

I have been successful by just not pushing any buttons, and let it go through it automation about 4-5 times and then it will connect you. Plan on being on the phone for at least an hour, for when you do get a live person, they can't help you and they will transfer you to someone who can. The IRS told me to call later in the eveing when it maybe isn't so busy.

Menard's, a home improvement chain in the USA would be a nice addition for some of us. I find that hitting zero during the message recycles the opening voice mail message and after 3 interrupts, you get an actual person. Would be nice to avoid the hassle and time. After all who wants to hear, dial 1 for a, b & c, dial 2 for x, y or z, dial 3 for .....

Anyone have a way to bypass the prompts for EMC Morgtage Corporation, toll free number 800-723-3004. Its nearly impossible to get a human. In the past I've always been able to trick their phone system and get someone but they've recently updated their phone menus.

Globe Life and Accident Insurance Company
has no discernible way to contact a human by phone. Their premium notices contain only a non toll free number. The toll free number on their website has it, but both numbers merely connect to a recording with numerous options.

I work for a Therapist practice, and I found this site while researching ways to get a live person on the phone for insurance verification and claims nonpayment questions. It has been a big help, and I plan on implementing many of the suggestions! However, I noticed that not very many medical insurance companies are listed. The major ones I need include Blue Cross Blue Shield Georgia; Aetna (which is listed, but I haven't tried the shortcut yet); Magellan, PCNB, Humana, Cigna, Kaiser Permanente, Value Options, United Behavioral Health. Some of these may be included, so I will check out your list to see which ones are on there and which are not.
Anyhow, thanks for providing this valuable service - I am hoping it will help me cut down my wait time on calls by at least half!

Has anyone had any luck getting a supervisor on the line with VivaAerobus (Mexican Airline)? The only number on their website goes to a group of attendants that swear up and down that there is not a supervisor at that location to field problems. Please find phone numbers and email information for the executives and corporate officers at Comcast. Their high speed internet is currently worse than dial-up, their customer service is non-existent, they engage in deceptive billing practices, and they misrepresent their services. Calling their 800 number is useless. Comcast is engaging in unethical and illegal business transactions and people who rely on internet access for their livelihood (i.e., the self-employed)are at their mercy since in many areas they have no competition. Their illegal practices must be stopped. I would also appreciate any other advice and/or suggestions for dealing with Comcast.

Try this:
1. Go to their web site and find the physical address for the company.
2. Go to 411.com and look up the address in the "reverse address" tab. Write down the phone number.
3. Go to the SEC web site and see who the executives are.
4. Call the LOCAL phone number for Comcast and ask for the executives BY NAME.
5. At the very least, you will get the secretary/admin assistant for that executive. Explain your situation clearly, calmly, and nicely. Get that person on your side.

This will bring up their address and phone number.
Go to 411.com and look up the address in the "reverse address" system and see if there is a different phone number.
This works really well for web sites; this is the registration information, and it is public record.
As a bonus, executive names are listed as well. Ask for them by name. Be nice, keep your voice down, and explain calmly and clearly your issues.

eee pc manufacturer of the tiny laptops 7" screens, advertises on various websites however takes no responsiblity for their product but rather puts the responsibility on the site who sells it. Buy.com is a great example. Buy.com sells the eee pc, however if you need to return the pc you'll get the old "call asus (they make the eee pc)", then asus says "call buy.com" and it's a ring around the rosey.. So I called Visa, my credit card company and told visa about the shenanagans, I was given an instant credit of the monies right back onto my card that instant. Next day I called buy.com, told them I've already been refunded by visa and then buy.com gracefully gave me an rma # after speaking with a few "supervisors" after being on hold for several minutes. not only did i get an rma # but buy.com also gave me a packing slip for free shipping via ups. very shady experience between both companies and I can see many people getting a raw deal who don't know what to do when both company's claim no responsibility. So now you know what to do I personally will never ever buy from either company again. Let me also say that asus tech support for eee pc is supposedly 24/7 they never answered their line it just kept ringing and then some dumb guys voice talked about who knows what I waited 4 hours (not a lie) no one answered ever. Stay away people crap product (eee pc) and crap company too!

When I phoned their land line, the people who answered the phone were very rude. When I finally got a person, that person was abrupt and uncaring and trivialized my issue. I reached Mars U.S.A. who seemed to care and asked how they could make my situation "right", but then said my only avenue was to contact Mars Canada. This was hopeless. It has been impossible to reach another person at Mars Canada and I tried to look up shareholder information and company structure and executives and can't find that information anywhere.

This is the most user unfriendly IVR that I have ever encountered. You need to be a miracle worker to get through to this major natural gas company in Canada. They recently and deliberately made it this way. Their Greater Toronto Area (GTA) number is 1-888-447-4911. Good luck trying to get a human being (and even better luck trying to get one that gives a damn). I was able to reach one by going through their Sales prompt, and she did not care that I was complaining about their crappy IVR system. When it comes to complete jerks implementing an IVR, these guys definitely would win the prize.

There is no way to talk with a human. This mortgage company took over my account from Option One mortgage. Option one was easy to get a hold of. Amercian Home Mortgage Servicing is IMPOSSIBLE to deal with, they don't credit payments on time, then you cannot call them to complain as you end up in endless loops.

ACS Education Services has lots of numbers to call them but if you have a problem but don't have an account number or social sec number that they recognize, then you can't get through. So in a case where you are trying to remove them from your credit report, you have no way to get help.

Sam's Club main customer service number is 1-888-746-7726. Brief instructions: "Press numbers at random until you get to a person."
That is nearly verbatim the tip that I got from Kim who was very helpful. She says she's been complaining for a year about the voice prompts but nothing has changed. The main menu has a bewildering selection of 7 options, none of which applied to me (warranty service). And each one seems to have many levels of submenus. Almost no menus have "for all other options, press X" It was only by persistence and luck I got through at all. The good side is Kim was extremely friendly AND competent and worth almost any gauntlet.

We charged a car rental through Hawaiian Airlines, with a link to Budget car rental, which now uses a rental outsourced company in Ireland called Cartrawler. This company is really hard to access via their web site or by the listed phone #. The number listed for information is 1-800-614-2976. The number we were given by a phone representative in Ireland is 353-1499-9609. We don't really know if this works because we were forwarded by a Hawaiian phone rep that called this number. It seems that all car rentals are now handled by this company worldwide. Their is now a cancellation charge of 25 euro or $33. We called to find out why we charged for the rental the day after we booked, 4 months in advance, also they charged us twice and had no idea why. I guess this is the new way to do business.

There is a company called Valumax (also known as valumax123, AK9 Valuemax and IK9 vlauemax) that people sometimes get signedup for via intellius links. To cancel this unwanted charge you have to dig to find a number. The get human number is 1-888-205-2257 enter the customer code they sent tou your e-mail and then choose option 2. They can cancel for you without a fuss if you do it quickly.

Would you please add the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Paper? Whenever you try to get through for a non-delivery issue (or other issues), they put you on hold and tell you that you're the 15th caller or he 27th caller (where ever you are in their Q, and please hold. "all agents are helping others, please wait". they keep repeating the agent helping others every minute or so. After about 3-4 minites they ask you if you want to place your call on automatic callback. If so, press 1. I didn't press 1, just continued to hold and the automated voice tells me they have placed my call on automatic call back. This happened 2 days in a row. Very Very frustrating. We just added the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to the G2H database. I was not able to replicate the problem that you were having with it putting you into callback whether you wanted it or not. The automated system is poorly implemented and should be fixed. The switching between speech recognition and button pressing is really bad.

Could you ad "MTS Allstream" to your list, you can Never get through to "customer support" [I don't think they know what that means] for phone, internet or their TV service. I called them every day since Jan 07/09 to today Jan 22/09 several times a day and even at 2-3 am.... I only got an answer [after waiting on the line for 1-2 hours] 3 times in the past few weeks... most of the time the automated machine hangs up after pressing several numbers and waiting ten minutes...I hope 20 new companies move into Manitoba and put them out of business by showing them what customer care is all about! Blizzard Entertainment (best known for World of Warcraft) has always been extremely helpful and based out of California when we call Billing & Account Services. See http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=20606 for contact info. There is/was a way to get "transferred to a priority queue" since they're sometimes overwhelmed by shear call volume, can't remember the combination though.

The number on the card and agreement papers is fully automated, no options for a live person.
I tried using the credit card services number and when the transferred me, the new department couldn't pull my account because it isn't tied to a personal checking account with a Chase bank.
My card is for unemployment insurance payments and terms and conditions are unacceptable, so I want to cancel it.
I've already changed my payment to direct deposit, but the Chase debit card charges fees for inactive accounts.
This card is forced on anyone in Michigan filing an unemployment claim, even if they opt for direct deposit, as I did, when they file. Please help!

could someone please help the people who are unemployed get in contact with someone at the unemployment agencies it is unreal that we have to hold on for up to two hour in Louisiana i don't know about anywhere else but this is unreal.Thanks

There is nothing you can do about expediting a call to the unemployment office. Here in Nevada the wait can range up to 2 hours. They hired more people in the Unemployment office to handle the increased number of calls. They even have Saturday hours, and still the wait is 1-2 hours.
You can try at slower times. Be aware of the busiest times: Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. Listen to the recording that tells you when the relatively slow times are, and call then.

I googled these complaints this call center. This is a nuisance who never wants to talk to anyone! They just call everyday leaving a message from "Cindy Jones"! They say the company is "MCI", but I don't suspect it's the one you have already in your database. If you can get a human at this place, I'll dance at your wedding! Thanks!

Request someone place Acai Berry Detox be placed on this list. They operate under a pharmaceutical company called FWM Food Labratories. Their address has two listings: (1) 3007 Greene St., Hollywood, FL 33020 and 2495 Stirling Rd. #20, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312. Their information shows a phone # of 954-699-0814 but indicates it has been disconnected. They also show a 866-604-9247 that will not answer and a 866-949-0138 which you can only get people from India that will not put you in touch with anyone and only says the same things over and over. I asked for the address of the corporate office but they said they could not give that information for security reasons. I have sent emails to www.myordersupport.com and to fwmcancellation@gmail.com and nothing is ever answered. A scam undoubtedly, but these are places recommended by Dr. No, Oprah, and Rachael Ray to name a few. They need to be checked out before it is too late for others.

I'd really love a way to get a human for National Home Protection home warranty company's Accts Payable department. If you try and go thru customer service they transfer to a line that rings forever, not even a voicemail, and going through their contractor authorization line is a pain because there is always at least 45 minutes of hold time
